Part 1: The Watchman and the call to duty

This article is titled “The Watchmen and the Call to Duty.” This article emphasizes the critical role that Christians play in influencing and shaping society. We can draw parallels between the biblical concept of watchmen and the responsibilities that believers have in the modern world, particularly regarding moral and biblical vigilance.

The biblical figure of the watchman, (referenced in any passages in the Old Testament, particularly in Ezekiel 33) is depicted as a guard or sentry, placed on the walls of a city, tasked with the duty of alerting the inhabitants to impending danger. The watchman’s role is both proactive and protective; they must not only be vigilant but also communicate warnings to those who might be unaware of the threats approaching their communities. This metaphor serves as a powerful call for watchmen to take their roles seriously in today’s society, as they are positioned to observe the governmental, moral and spiritual conditions around them.

God has called each Christian for His purpose and plans for this present age in the kingdom of God. The watchmen have a task to see and warn, or they are held accountable. Not all Christians are to be watchmen, but those who are should be listened to with caution, discernment and wisdom and acted upon if witnessed by the Spirit of God.

Modern society faces numerous threats—cultural, political, and spiritual—that requires watchmen and Christians generally to be vigilant and engaged. Many Christians and their leaders have become passive, failing to recognize the importance of their involvement in the public square. This disengagement has allowed moral decay to take root in society. By drawing attention to various social issues such as greed, injustice, corruption, lack of liberty, excessive taxation, and the erosion of family values, we can illustrate the urgent need for “the called” to stand as watchmen.

Christians also need to be aware of the concept of spiritual warfare. Christians are not only fighting against physical adversities but also against spiritual forces that seek to undermine God’s order and truth. We encourage readers to understand the spiritual nature of the battles being waged in society, and we emphasize the importance of prayer and reliance on God’s strength. This perspective positions the church not just as a passive observer but as an active participant in combating evil and promoting righteousness.

The watchmen need discernment. Discernment enables Christian leaders to recognize false teachings, cultural shifts, and societal and governmental trends that conflict with biblical truth. Believers are encouraged to study the Scriptures diligently and remain grounded in their faith to effectively identify and counteract the lies that permeate society. This discernment, combined with courage, equips believers to speak truth boldly and compassionately.

It is also paramount for unity among believers. The watchman’s task is not one that can be accomplished in isolation. Collaboration and support within the Christian community is essential and vital for effective engagement in societal issues. By coming together, believers can strengthen one another and amplify their voices in the public discourse.

In conclusion, this article serves as a rallying cry for Christians to awaken to their responsibilities as watchmen or supporters of watchmen, in society. We emphasize the need for vigilance, discernment, prayer, and unity in order to effectively confront the governmental, moral and spiritual challenges of the modern world. We call on believers to embrace their calling and actively engage in the culture, urging them to be proactive agents of change, grounded in biblical truth.
